In recognition of all that recently retired Portage County Lieutenant Jan Taylor has given to her community, a group of Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) students wanted to give something back to her.
Hearing that health issues are hampering Taylor’s mobility, MSTC’s Corrections Club decided they wanted to take action and help. The group quickly came up with a plan to build a wheelchair-accessible deck for Taylor’s house.
The Corrections Club volunteered their time for demolition of the old deck while Ryan Hyer Construction donated their time to build the new deck. Taylor asked to pay for the lumber herself, though Feltz Lumber provided those building materials at cost. The Corrections Club then applied stain and donated $500 in gift cards to Taylor.
“Our goal was to get the deck built as soon as possible so Jan would have one less worry on her plate,” Kostuchowski said. “We are thrilled that she has a comfortable and accessible place to spend time with family and friends, garden, read, and enjoy moments with her dog.”
Taylor worked for the Portage County Sherriff’s Office and Stevens Point Police Department before returning to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office as Lieutenant. Taylor retired in August. She also taught law enforcement classes at MSTC and is a passionate advocate of Special Olympics.
