Council to Fill Second District Second Monday Night
By Brandi Makuski
The Stevens Point Common Council on Monday will consider at least four applicants to fill the vacancy for District 2 Alderperson.
The seat became vacant when Councilwoman Joanne Suomi passed away after a brief battle with cancer in September.
Four candidates have submitted their applications to the city prior to Friday. Illinois Ave. resident Denise Mrozek says she attended local schools and has two Bachelor of Science degrees in accounting and business administration. She is an employee with Sentry Insurance.
Former District 2 Alderman Hans Walther is also seeking the spot. Walther began serving on the Common Council in 1995 and was later defeated by Suomi. He also served on the Portage Co. Board for one term from 1998-2000. Walther works at Fleet Farm.
Rich Spread has also applied for the seat. Spreda has been working at NewPage for more than 30 years and is a certified sports official with the WIAA. He volunteers at Ministry St. Michaels and has experience with Six Sigma.
Another applicants for the position is Glenn Aavang, a 22- year resident of the second district. Aavang did not indicate his current employer but did say he has 20 years of experience in aircraft maintenance and upper management. He also indicated on his application that he has a B.S. in Psychology from UW-LaCrosse.
The Council will consider the applicants, as well as others who may come forward tonight, at Monday’s 7 PM Common Council meeting at the courthouse. The public is welcome.
