North Central Region Road Construction Update

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) provides a weekly update on road construction in North Central Wisconsin, which includes: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood counties.

Construction-related traffic impacts are subject to change and are dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction status.
 
 
Green Lake County
 
Highway: WIS 23 (*updated*)
Location: Green Lake County A to Arcade Glen Road (Ripon)
Schedule: April 21 to late November 2014
Cost: $14 million
Description: Crews will reconstruct WIS 23 from WIS 49/County A to Arcade Glen Road.
Traffic impacts:

 

  • The new traffic signals at the intersection of WIS 49 and County A are scheduled to be operational on Tuesday, November 11. The intersection is currently open as a four-way stop.
  • WIS 23 (County A west to WIS 49) is closed until November 15, 2014. Traffic is detoured via WIS 73, County K, and County A.
  • The Puchyan River Bridge (WIS 23) is closed to all traffic.
  • Local access to properties and businesses will be maintained.

 

 
Lincoln County
 
Highway: WIS 64 (*updated*)
Location: County W (Merrill) to Langlade County Line (Antigo)
Schedule: September 15 to November 15, 2014
Cost: $1.6 million
Description: Crews will resurface WIS 64 and replace the existing guardrail to meet current design standards. One bridge along the project will receive an epoxy overlay.
Traffic impacts:  Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures, flagging operations and temporary traffic signals.
 
Marathon County
 
Highway: I-39 (*updated*)
Location: I-39 bridges at the WIS 153 interchange (Mosinee)
Schedule: September 3 to October 30, 2015
Cost: $3.4 million
Description: Crews will remove and reconstruct the new concrete bridge decks and parapet walls, new guardrail and some pavement replacement on I-39. Improvements also include repairing the concrete slope paving under the bridges and some minor repairs to the median along WIS 153
Traffic impacts: WIS 153 (under the I-39 bridge) is reduced to one lane in each direction until November 14.
 
Highway: I-39 (*updated*)
Location: I-39/Business 51 interchange (Rothschild) 
Schedule: August 25, 2014 to late 2015
Cost: $12.2 million
Description: Crews will reconstruct all I-39/Business 51 interchange ramps, reconstruct Business 51 between Village Way and Eagle Nest Boulevard, realign Morrison Avenue with the southbound I-39 ramps, reconstruct the Cedar Creek bridge, construct pedestrian and bicycle accommodations along Business 51 and construct an off-road, multi-use path along northbound Business 51 between Village Way to Stoney Rivers Drive.
Traffic impacts: Business 51 is closed from County XX to Eagle Nest Boulevard until November 19, 2014. Traffic on Business 51 is detoured via Imperial Avenue, Stoney Rivers Drive, and Eagle Nest Boulevard. Stoney Rivers Drive will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
 
Highway: WIS 29 (*updated*)
Location: Sunrise Drive to Business 51
Schedule: April 29, 2014 to May 25, 2017
Cost: $18.8 million
Description: Crews will replace the pavement on eastbound and westbound WIS 29 and replace the bridge decks of the structures located over the Wisconsin River and Business 51. Crews will also raise the Sunrise Drive overpass and repair the overpass’ bridge deck.
Traffic impacts: During construction, WIS 29 and Business 51 will remain open to traffic in each direction. Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures during off-peak hours. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained. All traffic impacts for 2014, including nighttime closures, are expected to be completed the week of November 17.
 
Highway: Business 51 (Grand Avenue) (*updated*)
Location: Kent Street to Division Street
Schedule: April 28 to November 14, 2014
Cost: $2.9 million
Description: Crews will mill the existing pavement and replace it with new asphalt. The existing lighting system will be replaced, bicycle accommodations will be provided and the existing corrugated median will be removed.
Traffic impacts: Short-term lane closures will be necessary the week of November 10, so crews can complete work between Kent Street and Division Street
 
Highway: US 51 (*updated*)
Location: Marathon County U and K/Business 51 interchange, Wausau
Schedule: April 1, 2013 to late November 2014
Cost: $28 million
Description: Crews will reconstruct the interchange.
Traffic impacts:

 

  • Motorists on US 51 can expect to encounter brief, weekday freeway closures at 10 a.m., and 2 p.m. The 5 to 20 minute closures are required for blasting operations through November 7.
  • The on-ramp to northbound US 51 from County K is closed and will remain closed through November 2014. Traffic is detoured via Business 51, Merrill Avenue/County U, Overlook Drive, County K, and County WW.
  • Northbound US 51, traffic exiting to County K/Business 51, is detoured via the northbound US 51 off-ramp to County U, and Merrill Avenue/County U.
  • The eastbound and westbound lanes of County K (Business 51) under the US 51 bridges will remain closed through November 2014. Traffic is detoured via County U and Overlook Drive.
  • The on-ramp to southbound US 51 from County K will remain closed through November 2014.
  • US 51 traffic is shifted to use the adjacent temporary roadway on the southbound side of US 51 until early December. The speed limit on US 51 is reduced to 55 MPH between Bridge Street and Decator Drive.

  • The schedule is subject to change based on weather conditions and construction status.

 

 
Portage County
 
Highway: I-39/Reserve Street (*updated*)
Location: WIS 66 to Business 51
Schedule: October 13, 2014 to November 2015
Cost: $5.4 million
Description: Crews will replace the northbound and southbound I-39 bridges over Reserve Street. The southbound bridge will be widened to improve safety for traffic merging from Business 51. Additional improvements include: reconstructing part of Reserve Street between Northpoint Drive and Bluebell Lane and installing curb and gutter, bicycle lanes and a shared-use path along Reserve Street
Traffic impacts: No planned impacts on I-39 until next year. Reserve Street is closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic during construction until the end of the day Friday, November 14, 2014. No formal detour is posted.
 
Waushara County
 
Highway: I-39 (*updated*)
Location: Bridges along I-39, in the village of Coloma
Schedule: September 22, 2014 to November 15, 2015
Cost: $2.5 million
Description: Crews will improve three bridges along I-39: two over Waushara County CH; and the WIS 21 bridge over I-39.
Traffic impacts: Motorists on I-39 can expect to encounter single lane closures. No traffic impacts will take place on WIS 21 until spring 2015.
 
 
Motorists are reminded to drive with caution in the work zone and should be prepared to encounter slow moving trucks. Motorists should slow down, use caution and stay alert when driving through construction zones. To avoid delays, consider taking an alternative route and avoid peak travel periods.
