Ben Franklin Junior High was on a temporary lockdown on Tuesday as Sheriff K-9 units from Wood, Marathon and Portage counties performed one of their many training events throughout the year.
Steve Prokop, the school’s assistant principal, announced the dogs’ arrival over the loudspeaker mid-afternoon, when students were cleared from hallways and classroom doors were closed. Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Wachowiak, along with K-9 Baco, were one of three teams who made a sweep of the school.
Prokop said the sweep was for training purposes only and was unrelated to a recent bomb threat at the school. The training event lasted about 15 minutes and, as expected, the dogs found no contraband at the school.
