Romel Jean Cooney
Romel Jean Cooney, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend died at her home on November 12, 2014 surrounded and comforted by her family, as were her wishes.
Her loved treasures in life were her family, her husband Frank (deceased), her four children, Jacqueline Rogers, Carole (Gerald) Hobson, Daniel (Joan) Cooney, Terri (Stephen) Hansen, her seven grandchildren Justin Hobson, Tracie (Matt) Roberson, Colt Cooney, Jordan (Jackie) Hansen, Joshua Cooney, Michelle (Brendan) Henske, Lauren (Justin) Shelton, and her four great-grandchildren Annabelle and Charlotte Roberson and Sophia and Harrison Shelton.
If you were fortunate to know Romel, you were aware of her never-ending love and passion for family, her famous Easter egg treasure hunts, and birthday cakes for her grandchildren, her delicious homemade candy, her parties and luaus. She loved to cook, and garden.
Romel cherished her friendships developed over her 30 years of working and volunteering at the Lincoln Center, which provides Aging & Disability Resources for Portage County. She was most proud of her involvement and contributions as Lincoln Center’s Program Coordinator of Adult Day Care until her retirement in 1994, and as an instructor for Senior Aerobics. Her boisterous singing senior aerobics class, is legendary at the Lincoln Center/ARDC, which provided the most fun-filled physical exercise program for seniors. Romel strongly believed in seniors maintaining body and mental health fitness.
She had been involved with the Senior Center Advisory Board; her tenure as Program Coordinator of Adult Day Care contributed to the education of UW-Stevens Point students by serving as a social work/applied sociology field supervisor, and for many years was an official for national and local elections for the Town of Plover.
Portage County declared May 20th as Romel Cooney Day, in recognition of her long time commitment to the community, her contributions, efforts, dedication, determination, enthusiasm and positive attitude of communicating the differences of chronological aging, from biological, physical, and social aging.
Romel’s love for her family, enthusiasm, bright smile, warm and open heart, her enjoyment, and love of life were contagious. If you were fortunate to have known Romel or just met her once, it was memorable, never to be forgotten.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 11 AM – 2 PM, at Shuda – Plover Funeral Home, 2400 Plover Road, Plover, WI. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Portage County Lincoln Center, or the ALS Association.
