Deputies Locate Armed Robbers, Now in Custody
City-Times Staff
Portage County Sheriff’s deputies today have confirmed they have taken three suspects in an armed robbery into custody.
At 12:43 AM Sunday, Portage Co. dispatchers received a call reporting an armed robbery at the Wigwam Inn, a tavern in the Town of Alban. Deputies saw three suspects fleeing the scene on foot and into wooded area. Deputies created a perimeter and searched the area “extensively”, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Deputies later observed a vehicle matching the description provided by the caller traveling south on State Highway 49. The vehicle was tracked to the Village of Rosholt, where the suspects were located and arrested from a residence there without incident.
Portage Co. deputies were assisted by deputies from Marathon and Waupaca counties, as well as the Marathon County K-9 unit and conservation wardens from the Wisconsin DNR.
Sgt. Jacobs Wills of the Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office says a firearm was brandished during the robbery, during which an undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the tavern.
“They were pretty shaken up, you can imagine,” Wills said of the patrons in the bar. He did not know the exact number of people present at the time of the armed robbery, but did say there were “probably one or two” patrons present besides the bartenders. He added no one was injured during the robbery.
The identities of the suspects were not immediately available. More as we have it.
