Letter: Wescott Should Run for Mayor
To the Editor:
It seems every few days we see a new name added to the growing number of people planning to run for a city position. It is heartening to see so many individuals stepping forward, interested in working towards a stronger, livable community.
As we move towards a new year, we voters will have the fortune to choose from many candidates. Some of these candidates we know, as they are seeking re-election. Other candidates we may not know, yet! As voters, we need to take this as an opportunity to do our part – take time to listen, learn, and then vote for the candidate that will work to improve and protect the quality of life in our city.
There are an abundance of issues and positions for these candidates to contemplate. Solutions to reconstruction on Business 51, the redrawing of the city’s flood maps, strengthening the downtown businesses, improving the appeal and livability of housing within city neighborhoods will all affect the quality of living in Stevens Point.
Fortunately, at least until April, we have Interim Mayor Gary Wescott to pilot the city. His prior 12 years experience as Mayor of Stevens Point should make for a smooth transition period as Andrew Halverson moves into a position with Ellis Stone. Now, if we could convince our Interim Mayor Wescott to run for Mayor….! His experience and strong ability to listen, communicate and guide would be a great addition to the ballot in April!
