City resident Allen Rasmussen has announced he plans to run for District 5 alderman.

Rasmussen made his announcement in December.

“I’m very fortunate to be at a position in my life where I have the time and energy to make a difference in my community,” Rasmussen said in a statement. “After months of consideration and great support from citizens represented by the 5th District I am excited by the possibility of representing the people and helping to move Stevens Point forward.”

Rasmussen said he feel a “fresh perspective” is needed in the district.

“I want to represent FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE,” Rasmussen’s statement said. He said accessibility is among one of his to priorities. “I’m going to be sure all the people working together in the Ward [district] will foster progress without sacrificing the common good to move the City forward.”

Retaining city ownership of Edgewater Manor, fiscal responsibility and the Bus. 51 remodel are also among his top concerns.

Rasmussen is 46 and married with one child. He has been with Sentry Insurance for 28 years.

“My experiences, along with firm grounding in our community have taught me that we have so much to be proud of in Ward [district] 5 and throughout the City of Stevens Point,” he said. “I intend for my campaign to be as much a celebration of our accomplishments as it is a serious and informed dialogue about the challenge of working together to ensure that all of our residents and communities share in the City of Stevens Point’s successes.”

The 5th District is currently represented by Alderwoman Mary Stroik, who will not seek re-election.

Rasmussen is running against Bryan Van Stippen for the seat. The third candidate, Meleesa Johnson, withdrew in February.
