Letter: Christmas has Changed Over the Years
To the Editor-
My journey through past Christmasses. [sic]
1951 There are 3 things in the photo. A tree. A television set. And you, with one blond curl on the top of your head and a rosary in your paws. Merry Xmas, welcome to Earth.
1957 Gas costs 24cents. A home costs $2300. Jack and Biffer go to Bukolt Park to practice their quick draw with their toy guns. They come home intact. Merry Xmas, you are white.
1963 President Kennedy is murdered. Merry Xmas, your country weeps.
1964 Martin Luther King gets the Nobel Peace Prize. Che Guevara addresses the UN. Lenny Bruce gets 4 mos in prison. Merry Xmas, you’re 13 and things are starting to pop.
1965 Vietnam. Xmas truce is broken. LBJ ups the draft to 35,000 a month. Merry Xmas, you are not a soldier.
1970. You get a ticket jaywalking in Berkeley. You are gassed protesting the War. Merry Xmas, you are awake.
1973 Vietnam War Ends. Merry, Merry Xmas, you have stopped a flipping war.
1978 Harvey Milk is murdered. Merry Xmas, you are straight.
1980 Chernobyl, the worst nuclear disaster in history occurs. Merry Xmas, you don’t live in Siberia.
1992 William Jefferson Clinton is elected. Merry Xmas, Hope is palpable.
2000 Al Gore wins the presidency. Merry Xmas, the first cracks in the infallible Judicial system emerge.
2000 Your neighbors are stocking up on candles, batteries, and canned corn as if they are in a Twilight Zone episode. The 2000s are going to be a decade of fear and paranoia.
2001 Divorce. Merry Xmas, you are no longer a battered woman.
2003 America gets its war on. Merry Xmas, we slide into madness.
2005 Hurricane Katrina Merry Xmas, you don’t live in Louisianna. [sic]
2008 Barack (not Jefferson)Obama is elected. Merry Xmas, now we begin to dig out of the ruins.
2011 Our great state commences to crumbling. Teachers and unions are now the enemy. Merry Xmas, put those jaywalking shoes back on.
2014 Our shoes and shovels have been disappeared. The President’s plans and hands are tied. Americans are being pummeled and plowed under by corporate interests. My sincere hope is that we take to heart; “Stop children, what’s that sound? Everybody look what’s going down”. And after you look, you vote, each and every one of you. A rosary wouldn’t hurt, either. Merry Christmas to all.
