Students from McDill Elementary on Thursday cross County Highway HH in Whiting amid afternoon traffic.
Officials from the Village of Whiting were unable to find a crossing guard for the corner of HH and School Street in time for the start of the 2014-15 school year, despite the $11/hour wage offered. The previous crossing guards for the heavily-traveled intersection, a husband and wife team, retired after long-complaining about safety concerns while students were walking to and from school.
Whiting leaders last year had sent a letter to parents who lived on the north side of the highway asking for their students to either be driven or take the bus to school.
