PODS Looks to Jackson; Board to Take Tour Monday
City Times Staff
The Stevens Point School Board will tour Jackson Elementary on Monday prior to considering approving the new charter school opening its doors there.
The tour is expected to give the board a first-hand view of current conditions at the school, which has been closed since 2006. The board will need to consider possible uses at the property for the Point of Discovery School (PODS), as well as costs for necessary upgrades before the building is reopened to students.
The board will also consider allowing a professional development center to open at the site.
Along with the board, members from the PODS Governance Board, the district cabinet and specialists from the district’s technology department will tour the building.
The PODS concept, which employs an expeditionary learning model, was approved by the board in November. Open enrollment for the school goes through April 30. The school will take 50 incoming fifth and sixth graders for the first year with plans to expand later.
Along with the tour, the board will hold its regular meeting at 6:30 PM in the school, located at 1900 W. Zinda Drive, is open to the public.
