County Leaders Talk New Jail Concept
City Times Staff
Officials from Portage Co. on Monday will continue talks on a new justice center.
The county’s Public Safety/Emergency Management Committee will hear updates Monday morning on the concept of a new center, which includes the possibility of sharing space with the Stevens Point Police Department.
Interim Mayor Gary Wescott said he initiated informal talks with Sheriff Mike Lukas in January, hoping to find a joint solution for the county’s overcrowded jail as well as the city’s space problems in the policy department.
Lukas said the new jail concept is “only up for discussion…we don’t know where it will go”.
