Dozens line up an hour early Saturday for the seasonal opening of Belt’s Soft Serve- an annual unofficial kickoff to spring.
The soft serve stand, now in its 35th year at the location, opened Feb. 28 at 11 AM. About half a dozen die-hard fans camped out overnight- an annual custom involving tents, collapsible ice shacks and layers of thermal underwear- to be among the first in line for a taste of spring.
“We slept in our car last night in the parking lot,” said Leda Storm, who huddled under blankets with her son James. “But we were the first ones here.”
Storm said this was the second year she and her son camped overnight prior to the Belt’s opening. When asked why she and her son would endure the bitter cold, Storm said, “I have two words for you: Blue Moon.”
