Norbert Polum, 92

Norbert Polum age 92, passed away March 5, 2015 at his home with friends and family at his side.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Norbert will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday March 7, 2015 at St. Bronislava Catholic Church in Plover. Rev. Clayton Elmhurst will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 9:30 – 10:45 AM at the church on Saturday. Shuda Funeral Service is assisting the family.
Norbert was born in Wausau on March 1, 1923 to the late Felix and Cecilia (Kitowski) Polum who later moved to Stevens Point and then to Mill Creek. He attended and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1940.
In January 1943 Norbert entered the United States Army and was stationed in Camp Blonding Florida with the 475th Quarter Master where he completed his basic training as well as training in convoy truck driving. From there he went to and was stationed in San Francisco and was a truck driver for the 3790th QM truck company in the Oakland and San Francisco Bay area. He was then shipped to the South Pacific Islands. In the Tinian Island he was a jeep driver for the army officers.
In February 1946 Norbert was honorably discharged a Corporal with Good Conduct, earning the American Theater and Asiatic Pacific Service metals. He then returned to Stevens Point.
On May 16th, 1946 Norbert started his career for the Portage County Hwy Department as a Laborer and truck driver and then a mechanic. In April of 1964 he became Shop foreman until his retirement in 1985.
Norbert married Bernice (Sankey) on September 29, 1973 at St. Bronislava Catholic Church in Plover.
The couple settled at their current address in Plover. Norbert enjoyed polka dancing, gardening, tractors, and traveling.
Norbert is survived by his loving wife Bernice, Plover. His four step-children Ben (Dolly) Sankey of Plover, Arlene (Tom) Warzynski of Amherst, George (Louise) Sankey of Plover and Sandy (Randy) Weir of Iola. 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. His sister Lorraine (Henry) Tork, Stevens Point. His sister-in-law Cecilia Polum, WI Rapids.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: LaVern (Ted) Purull and Theresa (Ed) Duda, and his brother Morris Polum.
Norbert’s family wishes to thank Maple Ridge Memory Care, St. Michaels Hospital, Heartland Hospice and especially Sandra and Amy for the care and help they provided in his last days.
