Letter: Readers Supports Two Mary’s for Office
To the Editor-
Dustin Hoffman and Mia Farrow had just spent the last 36 hours together, but had yet to introduce themselves. What is your name? John. What is yours? Mary. How do you spell that? Today I am going to introduce you to 2 Marys. Renaissance Marys I call them.
In our state we have lost our smiles in a card game we knew was rigged from the get go. We will never be the same people we were before Scott Walker messed up our state. And we’ll never be naively in love with politics. Local races are every bit as important as state and national ones. We are building progressive candidates from the ground up in Point. At its best local government is a manifestation of our collective will and a tool for insuring the civic good of all. Providing those things we all need and want, but can’t supply solely by ourselves.
Mary McComb (D9) is a homegrown downtown business owner. She has been active in politics for decades, including singing at our Capitol. Mary Kneebone (D7) has been everything from a barista at a coffee shop to director of PC Literary Council to AF Sargeant to Suziki manager. These 2 Marys take their jobs seriously. And they will do so as Alderwomen.
Politics demands a hefty expenditure of intellectual capital to move our city forward. These ladies have an abundance of it. They don’t believe that the thermos keeps hot things hot and cold things cold because it is God. They believe in healthcare, education , living wage , jobs , gun control , unions, natural resources and parks, and climate control . Unlike their opponents, our Marys do not hate taxes. They know how to read and do math. When the Beatles first performed on Ed Sullivan they were paid $2400. It is 2015.
Spring has returned to Stevens Point like a tipsy deb sneaking home late from the ball, hair undone and a song in her heart. The turnout issue will melt like April snow, when folks have neighbors and relatives and union mates on the ballot. With the 2 Marys we are giving you something and someone to vote for. Unlike in the state capital, they will do something for us, not to us. Vote April 7th.
