Tight Race Yields Unofficial Winner in District 5

Early results give Bryan Van Stippen a small lead in the race for 5th District Alderperson.

The unofficial vote count in the District 5 alderperson race favors Van Stippen 206 to Al Rassmussen’s 187.

Three candidates ran for the seat after Mary Stroik filed non-candidacy papers late last year. After Meleesa Johnson bowed out of the race in February, that left the two new comers  vying to the position.

Van Stippen is an attorney who says that he would “bring a working knowledge of the law to the Council.”

Rassmussen admitted to not knowing “as much as others do” on various local issues but expressed a willingness to learn before making decisions.

Johnson dropped out of the race due to obligations with her full-time position with the Marathon County Solid Waste Department as well as her commitment as president of the Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin.
