Mike Wiza is the new mayor of Stevens Point, beating opponent Jerry Moore by a vote of 2,675 to 1,459.
Wiza was celebrating with his supporters at Rookies Sports Pub in south Stevens Point Tuesday night, where he remarked about the high level of support he says his campaign had from the beginning.
“We had a lot of people volunteering. We knocked on every door twice,” Wiza said. “We really just got the message out better, and I attribute that to all the people helping out.”
Wiza had previously run twice for the mayor’s seat in a twin contentious runs against former Mayor Andrew Halverson. He said he learned a lot from watching Halverson work, and how he communicated with the Council, and plans to adjust his time in office accordingly.
“The first steps I’ll be taking is, among other things, getting reacquainted with city staff,” he said, adding the City Council is now full of new faces and he also needs to work on the annual reorganization of city committees.
“I’ll be talking with all the members of the Council, and try to get everyone’s ideas out on the table, before that reorganization,” he said.
Moore’s reaction to the vote was one of disappointment, but not just because he lost the race.
“I’m just very disappointed by the low voter turnout,” Moore said. “But the voters got what they wanted.”
Wiza officially takes the mayor’s seat at midnight on April 21.
