SPASH Girls Soccer Opens WVC Play with 10-0 Win

By Ken McKenzie
The SPASH girls’ soccer team kept the action on their offensive end of the field in both halves Tuesday night as they earned a 10-0 win over Wausau East.
It was a big scoring night for senior co-captain and scholarship player Abby Bohanski as she scored four times and had four assists in the blowout.
SPASH junior Autum Shurbert-Hetzel scored three goals and had two assists in the flurry of offense that had almost constant pressure on the Wausau East goal for Alexis Pickard who had 13 saves on the night while yielding the ten goals. Shayna Molski was in goal for SPASH and was largely untested with three saves as SPASH defense limited East to only three shots in the 65-minute game.
“We’re happy with to get our first conference win,” said eighth year Head Coach Don Peel. “We have ‘two horses’ out front in our strong offense (referring to co-captains Bohanski and Justice Menge) and our wing play was just outstanding tonight.”
The early action saw some errant shots and several saves at the Wausau East goal before Bohanski broke through to get on the scoreboard at 16:12, assisted by Shurbert-Hetzel. Bohanski then provided the assist as sophomore Anna Zaaokowski netted a shot at 28:23 for a 2-0 lead.
Bohanski registered an unassisted goal at the 34 minute mark and then scored again at 37:03 with Zaaokowski returning the assist favor as SPASH exhibited total control of the game at 4-0 going into halftime.
Determined to make an early season statement to the rest of the conference, SPASH kept the pressure on as the teams began the second half with Jamie Clemons earning the 5-0 goal at just 02:05, followed by Shurbert-Hetzel’s first goal at 05:57; with both scores attributed assists to Bohanski.
Having found the range, Shurbert-Hetzel scored again at 12:26 (assist by Bohanski) and 31:34 with Jamie Clemons assisting. Bohanski hit the net one last time at 36:47 with Shurbert-Hetzel assisting and Kaylin Kostochowski scored unassisted to end the contest at 39:20.
Sporting a 4-1 overall record, SPASH travels to Wausau West Thursday at 5 PM and returns home to the Portage County Youth Soccer Complex next Tuesday at 7 PM to host Marshfield (2-2, 0-1) who dropped a 3-0 decision to Wausau West on Tuesday.
