SPPD: Keep Bicycles Locked, Stored Inside
For the City Times
The Stevens Point Police Department has seen an increase in stolen bicycles this spring, including a string of recent thefts.
According to a news release from the department, many of those bicycles were locked up or inside of locked buildings.
“Normally we see opportunist ‘joy riders’ taking an unlocked bike for transportation purposes,” said Sgt. Tony Babl. “We normally recover these bikes within a day or two. These recent strings of thefts have targeted higher value bikes where locks were cut or buildings were entered.”
Babl recommends bicyclists use a high-quality lock, and said riders should park their bikes in a well-lit area or indoors. He also suggests checking on the bike often and obtaining a bicycle license so the department has riders’ information on file.
Babl said anyone with information about stolen bicycles, or anyone who witnesses any suspicious activity, should contact the Stevens Point Police Department at (715) 346-1500 or Portage County Crime Stoppers at 888-346-6600.
