It was a clash of the top two teams in the Central Wisconsin-Eight, but in the end it wasn’t the good plays, rather the errors, that caused the Pacelli Cardinals to fall to the Weyauwega-Fremont Indians 3-0.
It was the fourth inning that cost the Cardinals the game. Prior to the inning, it was three up, three down softball, but it doesn’t take much to score when the teams collide that are the caliber of Pacelli and Weyauwega-Fremont. The Indians led off with a hit, then two errors allowed them to score the three runs which would suffice for their victory.
“We gave up a lead off base hit and then we had a throwing error and an error in the outfield,” Coach Ann Molski said. “I go back and I’m looking at the stat sheet and the book going ‘what in the world, what in the world’, but in the end it all came down to those two key plays.”
Pacelli attempted to mount a rally in the seventh, scoring a run but still fell short.
The Cardinals put Kaylee Krostag in the circle and though she only lasted four innings, she gave up three hits; three unearned runs; one walk and struck out two.
Offensively, both teams were similar with Pacelli recording four hits to the Indians three. Pacelli’s Ashleigh Fuchs was particularly efficient going 2-3 with a triple.
With the loss the Cardinals fall to 18-4 on the year and 10-3 in conference play.
“Going into the game there was no way we could regain conference or tie for conference, but we really didn’t want to let them have undefeated,” Molski said.
