A local property development firm, DB Green, is seeking more than $119,000 in grant funds for the redevelopment of a 110-year-old building located at 1055 Main St. in downtown Stevens Point.

The city’s Historic Preservation/Design Review Committee will meet at 4 PM on Wednesday in the City Conference Room of courthouse to discuss the request.

DB Green is requesting more than $119,000 in grant funds, half of their $238,000 project cost. Due to the amount of the request, the grant will also have to be approved by the city’s Finance Committee and Common Council. City staff recommends only approving $90,000; currently the city has $127,000 available in the grant fund balance.

Plans for the building, formerly Jim Laabs Music Super Store, include office space and store front on the first floor, with luxury apartment space on the second floor. City leaders approved the apartment plans in August.

Additional building improvements include upgrades to the north facade with new masonry work, removal of old windows and installation of four customized reproduction sandstone columns that would bring the building closer to it’s original design. The rear of the building will also see masonry and window repairs.

The building was constructed in 1905 and was mostly recently inhabited by Jim Laabs Music which recently moved their operation next door.
