POTD: All Fired Up

Members of UW-Stevens Point continuing education group Learning Is Forever (LIFE) met at the Stevens Point Fire Department today to learn more about the firefighters’ duties and responsibilities.
LIFE members were given a tour of the fire station, practiced using fire extinguishers and giving CPR and learned about water and ice rescues, confined space rescues and rescue task force equipment. UWSP’s website says “LIFE is a membership-based association of adult learners providing an opportunity to share experiences, promote intellectual and cultural enrichment, and encourage lifelong learning. It is hosted and coordinated by UW-Stevens Point Continuing Education and Outreach.”
“It’s an all around overview of what we do at the fire station and what we offer to Portage County as far as the Stevens Point Fire Department is concerned,” said Davis.
Assistant Fire Chief Jeffrey Davis said the LIFE members were so intrigued by a presentation they were given by the Fire Department at the university last year that they wanted a fuller learning experience.
Mark Seiler, a LIFE curriculum committee member, said the program offers almost 100 classes in everything from birding and history to sociology and 3D printing.
“It’s people who’ve retired and they come from all sorts of backgrounds,” said Seiler.
