Sheriff’s Office Increases Availability, Institutes Substations

For the City Times
Beginning this week, in an effort be more available to the entirety of Portage County, Portage County sheriff’s deputies will start using seven municipal halls as mini Sheriff’s Office substations.
The seven substations include:
• Town of Eau Pleine
• Town of Lanark
• Town of Pine Grove
• Village of Almond
• Village of Amherst
• Village of Junction City
• Village of Rosholt
The purpose will be to make deputies available to the public, complete reports and other paperwork and even take a break during their shift. During the course of their duties, patrol deputies will be stopping in at these town/village halls, usually after hours, rather than returning to the Law Enforcement Center.
“Our hope is that this will keep the deputies out on patrol, more visible, and more available to the public,” said Sheriff Mike Lukas. “Being able to get out of the squad cars and to a place with some room to work when typing reports will make them more efficient as well. It will also improve the safety and security of my deputies when they are working.”
When a squad car is at one of these locations, the public is invited to stop by, meet the deputy, voice any concerns, or simply say “hi”. The locations were selected due to their available facilities and strategic location throughout the county.
