New overhead hinges expected to save $800 annually

The Stevens Point Fire Department is a little greener these days.

The department this week announced the installation of a new Green Hinge System- an energy efficient door hinge designed to create a better seal against the rain, snow and cold.

Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Davis said the department was contacted by the company based in Lena, Wis. earlier this year for potential installation. Davis said the company reached out to Madison-based Focus on Energy for a energy audit and determined a better door seal would yield savings of about $800 annually.

“Basically they hold the door tight against the frame,” said Davis. “They’re kind of spring loaded, so when the rollers come down they hold the door tight for a good seal, so in the winter there’s not a half inch gap.”

Davis added installation cost the city about $2600, but about $1500 would come back to the city in the form of rebates and incentives. He added 11 overhead doors were replaced between both stations.

Mayor Mike Wiza was on hand for the install.

“Something as seemingly insignificant as a hinge can often be overlooked,” said Wiza. “But the energy savings we’ll see will not only pay for the hinges in two years, but save us money for years to come.” 

Wiza also said he hopes other overhead doors in the city, to include those at the city garage and the transportation department, would also be upgraded in the future.
