Dozynki Festival Delights With Music, Food

By Jake Mathias
Dozens of Polish families and cultural enthusiasts gathered at the Moose Family Center in Stevens Point this weekend for the 12th annual Dozynki Harvest Festival.
The festival- a kind of Polish Thanksgiving and heritage celebration according, to event organizers- featured live polka music all day. Saturday’s bands included local polka-favorites Norm Dombrowski’s Happy Notes and the TNT Polka Band from Pulaski on Saturday. Sunday’s music included Chicagoan Bernie Gorak with Polka Generation and the local Benji’s Polka Pak.
Traditional Polish food including pierogies- a potato dumpling- polish sausages, shredded beef sandwiches and a chicken dinner. Also on hand are the ever-popular Polish donuts, ponczkas, which are fried and filled with jellies, jams or custards.
A local Polish history exhibit featured information on local Polish immigration from the home country to Portage County.
Dozynki Harvest Festival continues through 6 PM on Sunday.
The Moose Family Center is located at 1025 Second St. N. in Stevens Point.
