SPASH Homecoming to Peak with Parade, Rally, Game

By Brandi Makuski
It’s Homecoming Week at SPASH and things are jumping. The school’s typical events- dress-up days, powder puff and treats at lunch- are just a small part of the festivities, according to Principal Jon Vollendorf. The Mr. SPASH contest took place Wednesday night in the school’s fieldhouse- with more than 1,000 in attendance, and Friday will be chock full of activities open to the public including a parade, pep rally and football.
“It’s going great so far,” Vollendorf said. “Mr. SPASH is one of the big things this week, and the kids are revving up for that.”
On Thursday, students held a flannel dress-up day and the Student Senate sponsored a root beer float giveaway during lunch. Students also worked on their parade floats after school. Senior powder puff also practices for Friday’s game.
Friday is SPASH Pride Day, when students will wear red and black. The annual Homecoming Parade begins at 12:15 PM.
The parade route will travel down Prais St., then left on Minnesota Ave. to Goerke Park.
Vollendorf said the school’s pep rally will begin about 1 PM at Goerke Field. And this year, SPASH has opened the door for 9th graders- who are housed at the city’s two public junior high schools- to join in on the fun.
“We have been having this conversation for a number of years,” he said. “We felt since they are technically in high school, they’re earning high school credits, we should introduce them to the energy of Homecoming in a way that has a minimal disruption to their school day as possible.”
The SPASH Panthers kickoff against visiting Marshfield at 7 PM.
The school’s Homecoming Dance is Saturday at SPASH. For more information, see the school’s website at www.pointschools.net.
