Robert John Steinke

Robert John Steinke, 93, Plover, a former chairman of the Portage County Board of Supervisors and the town of Plover, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015, on the family homestead.
A funeral service will be held at noon Monday, Nov. 2, at Divine Word Lutheran Church in Plover, with the Rev. Scott Wolfram and the Rev. Frederick Mutterer co-officiating. Burial will be in Plover Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the church from 10:15 a.m. Monday until the service.

Mr. Steinke was born Oct. 9, 1922, in the town of Stockton,
a son of the late William and Gladys (Greenwood) Steinke. He grew up on the
family farm just outside of Arnott, attended a one-room schoolhouse and
graduated from eighth grade.
He then went to work full time on the family farm.
He was married to Myrna Fletcher May 16, 1942. They were
married for 67 years, when she died July 22, 2009. They had their usual daily
lunch date at The Food Stop in Whiting and then in recent years at Burger King
in Plover.
Shortly after he turned 20, he purchased land to start his
own family dairy farm. He was involved with the farm until 1988. While working
as a dairy farmer, he worked for the Whiting Paper Mill for 15 years.
He was a member of the United Paper Workers (UPW)
International Local 370.
He was also dedicated to the community. In the 1950s, he served
as president of the board of a one-room schoolhouse for six
years.
In 1971, he was elected chairman of the town of Plover and held
that position until 2005. While serving for the town of Plover, he established
good working relations with the village of Plover, helping to create a boundary
and revenue sharing agreement with the village.
In 1972, he was elected as County Board supervisor of
District 17 and he served until 2006. In 1980, while serving on the County
Board, he was selected as County Board chairman and held this position until
1988.
While serving on the County Board, he served on the Planning
and Zoning Committee as well as the Highway Committee. He was also involved
with the Smart Growth Committee and process in the county. He also played a role
in establishing the Portage County highway facility in Plover.
He was a member of the Associated Milk Producers Incorporated
(AMPI) for 35 years, serving on the Board of Directors for three years. He was
also a member of the Midwest Breeders Cooperative for 35 years. He was on the
Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Counties Association.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth (Mary) Steinke, Stevens
Point; three daughters, Carla (Cheryl) Steinke, Plover, Kathleen (Donald)
Embertson, Stockton, and Priscilla (Brian) Schultz Virginia Beach, Va.; nine grandchildren, Matthew Embertson, Klaven
Embertson, Jessica Mews, Lisa Slowinski, Kenny Steinke, Christina Steinke, Dani
Nigh, Robert LeRoy Steinke and JoJo Bean; and four great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Maurice and
Carl; and one sister, Gerty.
