Five local high school students have been awarded scholarships by the Republic of Korea. 

Scholarship recipients include Jocelyn Krutza and Kara Weller of Stevens Point, and Plover residents Katherine Lotzer, Jared Lunt and Maximillian Seiter. The group accepted their awards- scholarships from the Ministry of Patriots and Veteran’s Affairs- during a scholarship ceremony held at Wisconsin Veteran’s Museum in Madison on Oct. 16.

The MPVA Scholarship was created by the Republic of Korea to support the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Korean War Veterans.

According to a news release from the Village of Plover, the scholarship program is, “part the Korea’s ongoing efforts to increase awareness of the Korean War and to promote appreciation of its pivotal role in setting the course for the shaping and development of modern Korea as we know it today.”

The village has a special relationship with Korean War veterans, thanks in part to Plover’s large Korean War Memorial located at Lake Pacawa. The village holds memorials and other veteran-related ceremonies at the war memorial throughout the year.

The scholarships were presented by Consul General Sang-il Kim, with the assistance of Deputy Consul General Jae-woong Lee of the Republic of Korea Consulate in Chicago, Illinois. Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos, and Stevens Point-area Korean War veteran Lawrence Krutza, were also present.

Village of Plover Administrator Dan Mahoney served as Master of Ceremonies for the presentation.
