Stevens Point Judo members place at state tournament

The Stevens Point Judo Club has two winners in the recently-held Badger Open Judo tournament. The annual event was held in Fond du Lac and featured more than 100 competitors participating from across the state.
A variety of state, regional, national and international referees assisted to make sure the right competitor left the mat as the winner. The new CARE system was used, a system similar to instant replay seen during a Packer game.
In this case when a question of impact is challenged on the mat, a referee and two judges review the technique in question. The rule of “three” determines the winner and the referee awards the point to the correct judoka.
Justin Walk entered the senior men’s heavyweight division, his first judo tournament and placed third.
Nate Way entered the master’s division (35 years and older) heavyweight class. Way took second place. A few weeks earlier, he had entered the AAU National Tournament in Milwaukee and earned a third-place medal.
