Lightning Strike Possible Cause of Plover Fire

City Times Staff
A Plover family escaped unharmed after their home caught fire Wednesday afternoon.
Metro fire crews- consisting of Stevens Point, Plover and Hull fire departments- responded to a home on the 4800 block of Still Meadow Lane about 5 PM on Nov. 11. A brief but strong thunderstorm had passed through the area just moments before.
Crews from the Park Ridge Fire Dept. were placed on standby but not called to the scene.
Ashley Congdon, 14, said she was home with her father and the family dog when they smelled heavy smoke. A neighbor said Congdon came running to her home for assistance, without shoes on her feet and wet.
Fire, police and EMS crews were still on the scene at 7:30 PM, with some firefighters investigating trees behind the Congdon home, where some witnesses say bark was stripped from trees also stuck by lightning.
How much damage the home sustained was not immediately known. More details on the fire would be available Thursday, firefighters on the scene said.
