Defending State Champion SPASH poised for another run

After winning the WIAA Division 1 State Championship last
season, the Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) boys basketball team will
look to make a run at another State Title this season.
The top-ranked Panthers return all but one player from last
season’s rotation, when they finished 27-1 and beat three-time defending State
Champion Germantown 67-51 in the State Championship Game to claim the State
Title.
SPASH entered this season as the top-ranked team in the
state and opened at home with a 108-71 win over East Troy Saturday, Nov. 29,
and then beat Appleton East (2-1) 74-36 at the SPASH Fieldhouse Tuesday, Dec.
1, to improve to 2-0.
“We’ve got a lot of nice pieces back,” said SPASH boys
basketball head coach Scott Anderson. “We’ve got kids who understand how we
play, they understand how hard we have to practice and play, and they
understand what it takes to get to be a Conference Champion and to be a State
Champion.
“And I hope that we use that to our advantage, and the way
you do that is by having that hunger and that desire and that work ethic every
day in practice to get better,” he said. “So far the kids have been very locked
in and working at getting better, so if we continue to do that, we’ll be in
good shape.”
