David Shorr filed his paperwork to run for councilman of the 2nd District.

In a press release, Shorr refers to himself as a “policy expert, navigating many of the different challenges that our communities and our wider world face.”

Shorr’s background includes work with foreign policy groups such as Human Rights First and Refugees International, and he has held leadership positions with local commissions and social service agencies in the communities where he lived previously.

According to his press release, Shorr was vice chair of the Human Rights Commission of the City of Iowa City and in Northern Virginia chaired the board of Offender Aid and Restoration of Arlington County, a counterpart to Stevens Point’s JusticeWorks.

He also has a master’s degree in public administration.

“We’ve watched the city council get pulled off into too many issues that don’t reflect this community’s values, like trying to sell off Edgewater Manor,” said Shorr in his statement. “I believe we can harness the work of the city in an entirely constructive and creative spirit.”

Shorr and his family moved from Iowa to their home on Peck Street after his wife Susan joined the UWSP as a professor in the music department in 2003.

The treasurer of the campaign committee “Stevens Pointers for Shorr” is retired SPASH faculty member Mary Jo Patton, and the campaign manager is Tyler Smith.
