Sentry Classic set for Sunday through Tuesday at Quandt Fieldhouse

The 44th Sentry Classic basketball tournament will be held
at Bennett Court

at Quandt Fieldhouse on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) campus
Sunday through Tuesday, Dec. 27-29.


A total of 16 high school basketball teams will compete in
the tournament, which has an American Division and National Division for both
the boys and girls.


Among the teams competing will be the boys and girls
basketball teams from Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH), Pacelli
High
School
and Amherst High School.


The top-ranked and defending WIAA Division 1 State Champion
SPASH boys basketball team (6-0) will look to remain unbeaten when it takes on
Sauk Prairie (3-2) in the Boys National Division at 7:45 p.m.
Sunday.


The Panthers are led by 6-2 senior point guard and NCAA
Division 1 UW-Green Bay recruit Trev Anderson (26.8 points per game this
season), 6-6 senior forward and NCAA Division 1 Marquette University recruit
Sam Hauser (17.5 points) and 6-7 sophomore forward Joey Hauser (19.5 points),
the top-ranked player in the WisSports.net Class of 2018, and are coming off a
99-69 win at previously sixth-ranked De Pere (3-2) Dec. 18.


Sauk Prairie is guided by head coach Levi Massey, a former
assistant coach for the UWSP men’s basketball team, and is led this season by
5-11 senior guard Seth Kostroski (20 points per game, 43.8 percent on
three-pointers) and 6-6 senior forward Brandon Spray (15 points, 8.8 rebounds,
42.9 percent on three-pointers).


In a battle of teams ranked in the Top 10, the SPASH boys
will also play at 7 p.m. Monday against eighth-ranked Muskego (5-0), which is
led by 6-0 senior point guard Caleb Wagner (25 points), 6-4 senior forward
Tommy Anderson (15.2 points) and 6-3 senior forward Matty Farner (14.8 points,
11.6 rebounds).


The SPASH girls basketball team (3-7) will open in the Girls
National Division at 5:15 p.m. Monday against New Berlin West (6-3), which is
paced by sophomore guard Alyssa Nelson (12.4 points), senior guard Claire
Radtke (9.7 points) and sophomore forward Maddie Fritz (9.1 points).


The Panthers are led by 5-10 sophomore guard Maggie Negaard
(22.5 points, 43.6 percent on three-pointers), 5-8 senior guard Taylor Beadles
(9.4 points) and 5-7 sophomore guard Halle Gregorich (7.6 points) and will also
play in the final game of the 44th Sentry Classic at 7 p.m. Tuesday night
against Nicolet (1-9), which is led by 5-9 senior guard/forward Brookelyn
Robertson (14.8 points) and 5-9 senior guard Michelle Pigg (6.8 points).


In the Boys American Division, the Amherst boys basketball
team (4-0) is ranked third in Division 5 in the WisSports.net Coaches Poll, and
will face Wausau Newman Catholic (6-2) in its Sentry Classic opener Sunday at 2:30 p.m.


Amherst is led by 6-4 senior forward Tyler Biadasz (18.7
points, 8.7 rebounds), who will play football at the NCAA Division 1 University
of Wisconsin next season, 6-0 senior guard Amaziah McCall (9.2 points, 3.5
assists) and 6-1 senior guard Garrett Groshek (7.8 points, 4 rebounds, 3.8
assists, 2.8 steals).


Newman is paced by 6-2 senior guard
Jake Gajewski (25 points, 8.5 rebounds), 6-2 senior forward Dane Fronek (20.5
points), 6-3 senior guard Jason Tubbs (10.4 points) and 5-9 senior guard Bailey
Lemke (9.4 points).


The Falcons will also be in action at noon Monday against
Green Bay NEW Lutheran (3-3), which advanced to the WIAA Division 5 State
Tournament last season for the third year in a row.


NEW is led this season by 6-2 freshman guard Samuel
Meerstein (15.2 points, 7.2 rebounds), 6-5 senior forward Gabe Lloyd (15.2
points, 10.5 rebounds, 46.2 percent on three-pointers) and 5-11 senior guard
Nathaniel Schaefer (12.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 2.8 steals).


The Pacelli boys basketball team (2-4) will also compete in
the Boys American Division, and is set to open Sunday at 6 p.m.
against Green Bay NEW Lutheran.


Pacelli is led by 6-0 senior guard Jake Elliott (18.3
points), 6-2 senior forward Chris Shibilski (10 points) and 5-10 senior guard
Trevor Glodowski (9.3 points), and will also play Tuesday when it squares off
with former Central Wisconsin Catholic Conference rival Newman at 5:15 p.m.


In the Girls American Division, the Amherst girls basketball team (5-2) will
tip-off at
12:45 p.m.
Sunday against Mosinee (3-3), which is led by 5-7 senior point guard Bailey
Schultz (team-best 13.7 points per game last season), the 34th-ranked player in
the WisSports.net Class of 2016 rankings.


The Falcons are led this season by 5-10 junior forward
Kendra Dombrowski (15.1 points), 6-1 sophomore center Heather Pearson (12.5
points) and 5-7 freshman guard/forward Ashley Groshek (8.6 points).


Amherst will also play Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. against Green
Bay NEW Lutheran (2-7), which is paced by 5-8 junior point guard Morgan
Meerstein (12.9 points) and 5-9 senior forward Alivia Wilke (7.6 points).


Also in the Girls American Division, Pacelli (2-6) will
square off with Green Bay

NEW Lutheran at
4:15 p.m.
Sunday.


The Cardinals are led by 5-9 senior guard/forward Sydney
Alery (8 points) and 5-9 junior guard/forward Christonna Shafranski (8 points),
and will tip-off the final day of this year’s Sentry Classic when they take on
Mosinee at noon
Tuesday.


An awards presentation will be held after the final game in
each division, with awards given to the All-Classic Team, Mr. or Ms. Hustle,
Don Friday Leading Scorer and Warren P. Choudoir Outstanding Player for each
division.


Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students in high school
and under, with all proceeds to go to the Community Parks Improvement fund.
