Gary Neil Walter, 82, formerly of Aniwa, father of a Junction City woman, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Hogarty Community Church in Hogarty in Marathon County, with the Rev. Roger Davis officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the John Owen American Legion Post 287 of Mattoon.

Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the service.

Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home in Birnamwood assisted
with arrangements. Condolences may be offered online at www.schmidtschulta.com.

Mr. Walter was born Aug. 8, 1933, in Wabeno, a son of the
late Louis and Mildred (Schmidt) Walter.

He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the John Owen
American Legion Post 287 in Mattoon.

He was married to Lydia Kainz Oct. 9, 1954, in Hogarty in
Marathon County.

He worked as a welder at Wausau Iron Works for more than 32
years and retired from Central Fabricators after 10 years.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia Walter, King; three
children, Gary (Mindy) Walter Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla., Wendi (David)
Erickson, Junction City, and Nathan (Donna) Walter, Aniwa; three siblings, Joel
(Sharon) Walter, Karen Zahn and Denis (Carol) Walter; five grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one grandson.
