A Stevens Point who was arrested last May on unrelated charges is now facing new charges after allegedly resisting, battering and threatening a law enforcement officer.

David Adams, 56, was arrested on a probation violation from a Church St. motel on Dec. 7, 2015 without incident but became combative when he arrived at the Portage Co. Jail.

According to the criminal complaint, Adams became “visibly upset” and swore at jail staff, demanding his handcuffs be removed immediately, but he refused to lie down on a holding cell’s cot so the cuffs could be safely removed.

He then threatened to kill the officers present. Officers then “decentralized” him to the floor in an attempt to remove the handcuffs, where he continued to threaten to kill the officers. As one officer removed the cuff from Adams’ right hand, Adams “lunged” at the corrections officer and bit him on the leg.

According to the complaint, Adams also threatened to “blow this place up” during the commotion.

Adams is charged resisting a law enforcement officer, threatening a law enforcement officer and battery to a law enforcement officer and resisting a law enforcement officer.

If convicted of all the charges Adams faces up to 12 years and nine months behind bars and up to $30,000 in fines. He also faces a sentence enhancement of up to four years due to his repeat offender status.

He returns to court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 11.
