Burst Water Main Floods Church Street

City Times Staff
City crews have closed off a section of Church St. following a burst water main on Wednesday near the Nebel St. intersection.
Both southbound lanes of Church St. are closed, possibly for the remainder of the day, while crews turn off water and assess the damage. Gary Kuplic, water distribution superintendent for the city, said his department was notified of the water main bursting around noon.
The lanes will be closed until at least 8 PM, he said.
“But then the concrete guys come in tomorrow, so we’ll close [both lanes] down again tomorrow. It’ll be shut for for at least a good couple of days,” Kuplic added.
A detour will direct southbound vehicles to Water St. via Nebel St.
The same water line broke during the harsh winter of 2013 just in front of the BP gas station. Kuplic said the underground utilities in that part of town date back to the 1950s and were slated to be replaced the with the now-defunct remodel of Bus. 51.
