Candidates for the Stevens Point Common Council, Portage County Board, School Boards and some villages and towns filed nomination papers by the 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, deadline to run for office in the April election.

There will probably be primary elections for the Wisconsin Supreme Court and Portage County Circuit Court Branch 2 in February, but state elections officials will make that decision later.

The Supreme Court candidates are newly appointed Justice Rebecca Bradley, Appeals Judge Joanne Kloppenburg and Milwaukee Judge Joe Donald.

The candidates for Portage County Circuit Court are recently appointed Judge Robert Shannon, Clerk of Courts Trish Baker, Assistant District Attorney Dave Knappen and attorney Jared Redfield.

The deadline to file nomination papers was extended to 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, for the Stevens Point Area Board of Education after two incumbents failed to file the required non-candidacy papers.

The primary for both positons is tentatively planned for Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Shirley Simonis, Portage County clerk, said it is important for voters to remember to bring state-recognized valid IDs as the Voter ID laws are now in effect.

School Boards

Stevens Point

Potential candidates to the Stevens Point Area Public School Board of Education have until 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, to file nomination papers, which may be picked up at the district offices in Bliss Center.

The delay until Friday is due to two incumbents, Kim Shirek and Lisa Totten neglecting to file non-candidacy papers, reporting they wouldn’t seek re-election. As a result, the nomination deadline is extended three days.

Five people had filed nomination papers as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6. They were incumbents Jeff Ebel and Angel Faxon, as well as Dan Kontos, Amy Dailey and Rory Suomi. Ebel is completing a three-year term, while Faxon is completing a one year of a term she was appointed to fill when Alex Kochanowski resigned his position.

Four people will be elected to the board in the April election, three to the three-year terms held by Ebel, Shirek and Totten and the fourth to the one-year remaining on Kochanowski’s term.

The top three vote-getters will fill the three three-year terms and the fourth highest will fill the one-year term.

Tomorrow River

Three people are seeking two positions on the School Board for the School District of the Tomorrow River. They are incumbents Diana L. Bohman and Mark J. Kryshak and challenger Jessica Wiesman.

Rosholt

Three people are also seeking two positions on the Rosholt Board of Education. They are incumbents Lois Glodowski and Robert Wanta and challenger Jessie Bushman Anderson.

Information about candidates was unavailable from the Tri-County School District and the Almond Bancroft School District.

Villages

Almond: Incumbents Kurt Olson, Spence Bunders and Kory Stucker are the only candidates for the three open trustee positions.

Amherst: Incumbents Ken Stephani and Bob Rausch are seeking re-election, and Rick Daniels has filed papers to fill the position held by Laurel Mittelstedt for more than 25 years and who filed papers for non-candidacy.

Amherst Junction: A caucus will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at the Village Hall. The term of David Sopa will expire in April.

Junction City: Incumbents John Spreda and Craig Vitort are the only candidates for their positions.

Nelsonville: A caucus will be held Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Park Ridge: A caucus will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18.

Plover: Incumbents are the only candidates for trustees. They are Andrew Timm, Ward 1; Orville Damrau, Ward 2; and Al Tessman, Ward 3.

Rosholt: A caucus will be held.

Whiting: Incumbents Bill Horvath and Michelle Daniels filed nomination papers, while no one filed nomination papers for the third trustee position held by Richard Marquard, who filed notice of non-candidacy.

Towns

Two towns in Portage County require nomination papers, the towns of Hull and Plover, while all the rest hold caucuses for candidates.

Hull: Incumbent Dave Wilz and incumbent Rick Stautz, who was appointed to fill the position held by Melvin Bembenek, who resigned last year, are the only two candidates who filed nomination papers.

Plover: The town of Plover has three candidates for two trustee positions. They are incumbents Joe Firkus and Jim Rowe, who was appointed to fill a vacancy, and challenger Donald Davis.
