The City of Stevens Point is looking for applicants interested in representing the 5th District on the common council.

The vacancy became available shortly before the end of last year, when former Alderman Bryan Van Stippen announced his immediate resignation only eight months after being elected. Van Stippen is moving out of the area for work.

Mayor Mike Wiza said the city council will hold a special meeting on Monday to determine the timeline and procedure for filing the spot.

“It’s the same process we’ve used every other time, but we need the special council meeting because [council members] should approve it first,” Wiza said. “There’s no ordinance mandating [the process].”

Wiza said the city should allow a “reasonable” period of time for interested persons to apply for the spot, and residents should know what to expect once the application period closes.

When asked why the city hasn’t created an ordinance that addresses replacing a member of the council, he replied, “We’ve talked about that. We may.”

Those interested in applying for the spot can see the city’s website for application details. Applicants must be 18 years old, a resident of the fifth district, a U.S. citizen and not a convicted felon.

A letter of interest and resume should be submitted to the city clerk by the last Monday in January.
