Vote JoAnne Kloppenburg for Wisconsin Supreme Court
To the Editor:
We have another opportunity to elect JoAnne Kloppenburg to the Wisconsin Supreme Court Feb. 16. This time around, that’s exactly what we need to do.
As they say, “hindsight is twenty-twenty.” We need to learn from past mistakes and avoid repeating them. Looking back, returning David Prosser to the bench was a blunder of epic proportions.
Had Kloppenburg been elected to the court instead of Prosser, we could have avoided the embarrassment of having our highest court described in state and national press reports as dysfunctional, corrupt or perhaps worst of all, a circus.
I make this bold statement because I was fortunate enough to speak with Kloppenburg when she made a visit to Stevens Point.
Let’s call this meeting an impromptu job interview. She answered all of my questions in a thorough and thoughtful manner. I was able to assess her demeanor and get a first-hand impression of her character and personality.
There is no substitute for the personal evaluation that comes from one-on-one conversation. Although soft spoken, she is clearly a tough cookie who can get the job done with the utmost of professionalism. In my estimation, Kloppenburg will bring badly needed integrity, maturity, stability and experience to our highest court.
Her background is exceptional. She is a fully qualified legal professional and a dedicated public servant. She will bring to the court the commitment to ethical behavior that it so sorely lacking among the current conservative majority.
I want to be proud of the Wisconsin Supreme Court once again. I’m tired of judges who refuse to hold their colleagues accountable for unethical, uncouth and potentially criminal behavior. I want to vote for a justice I can count on. Someone who is ready to stand up to the challenges the court is most certain to face in the decades ahead.
With the election of Kloppenburg, we can look forward to the future with a sense of hope. Vote JoAnne Kloppenburg for Wisconsin Supreme Court on Feb. 16.
