Pointers Men’s Hockey Team Ready to Put a Check to Cancer
For the City Times
After finishing the last two seasons as the national runner-up, the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point (UWSP) Men’s Hockey team has enjoyed plenty of success on the ice.
This season is no exception as they are among the top ranked teams in the country while continuing to make a difference in the Stevens Point community by raising awareness and supporting a number of different causes at home games throughout the season.
With a Teddy Bear Toss to benefit children and families and a Food Drive for students in need successfully accomplished, the Pointers are ready for one of their biggest nights of the year to support local cancer patients on Saturday, Jan. 30.
The seventh annual “Put a Check to Cancer” will take place when the Pointers host Lake Forest College at 7 PM at K.B. Willett Ice Arena. The Pointers will once again wear special edition cancer awareness jerseys that will be raffled off as part of a silent auction.
All proceeds will benefit the Breast Care Center Fund at the Saint Michael’s Foundation. The Breast Care Center Fund was established in September 2012 to provide support, advocacy and education for patients being served at the Breast Care Center at Ministry Saint Michael’s Hospital.
Each year’s Jersey has featured a different design to make these auction items a piece of Pointer Hockey history while supporting the Saint Michael’s Foundation.
“We have been blessed with the support of UWSP men’s hockey and their loyal fans who have graciously provided more than $20,000 over the years to support local cancer patients through this event,” said Angie Heuck, director, Saint Michael’s Foundation.
Put a Check to Cancer offers the ability to bid on the jerseys in advance of the event via an online auction. With players from 10 states and three Canadian Provinces on this year’s Pointers roster, this feature expands the event to family members, friends and Pointer fans coast to coast.
Bids will be accepted online with the final silent auction moving to KB Willett Arena the night of the game. More information and a link to the online auction can be found here: athletics.uwsp.edu/PutACheckToCancer
Put a Check to Cancer is sponsored by Ministry Health Care, Team Schierl Companies and Sunrise Broadcasting, the radio home of Pointers Hockey on Sportsfan 100.5fm.
The event is traditionally one of the most well attended games of the season for the Pointers.
Advanced tickets are available and are also sold at the door. Reserved seat tickets are $8; general admission tickets are $6.
