United Way Seeks Learn for Life Reading Tutors

For the City Times
United Way of Portage County’s Learn for Life Reading Program is seeking second- and third-grade reading tutors to help at 14 schools throughout Portage County.
Learn for Life utilizes trained volunteer reading tutors who meet individually with students, a tutor commitment of a total of one hour per week. Tutoring sessions are individualized and based off of the student’s needs. Program data is collected and assessed throughout the year.
Current opportunities for tutoring include Tuesdays at Tomorrow River Elementary from 10 to 11 a.m.; Tuesdays at McKinley from 2 to 3 p.m.; Wednesdays at Madison from 11 a.m. to noon; Thursdays at Jefferson from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.; and Fridays at Bannach from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Substitute tutor options are available for 14 Portage County elementary schools as well.
The goal of the Learn for Life Reading Initiative is to increase reading achievement in the community so that all children, in Portage County, who are able, are proficient in reading by the time they finish third grade.
