Johnson to Fill Fifth District Seat

By Brandi Makuski
Meleesa Johnson has been elected by the Stevens Point City Council to fill a vacancy left in the fifth district.
Johnson ran for the seat last spring but withdrew before the election due to work commitments. She has a background in local government and is currently employed as the director of solid waste management for Marathon County.
Johnson replaces Ald. Bryan Van Stippen and was the sole applicant to fill his spot. The vacancy became available shortly before the end of last year, when former Alderman Bryan Van Stippen announced his immediate resignation only eight months after being elected. Van Stippen is moving out of the area for work.
Johnson will fill the post through the end of the Van Stippen’s original term, which expires in April of 2017.
