The city’s advisory committee on bicycles and pedestrians will hold a workshop on March 3 — and it’s looking for public input.

The bicycle and pedestrian advisory committee, which has limited authority and is comprised of five mayoral appointees, has scheduled a workshop to analyze goals and prioritize objectives in implementing the Portage Co. Bike and Pedestrian Plan, which the city adopted last year.

Last November, the committee recommended a new ordinance governing abandoned bicycles in the city — a measure the city council has yet to address.

Members of the public will work alongside city staff, the committee appointees and elected leaders to determine resources and potential timelines, according to Kyle Kearns, economic development specialist/assistant planner for the city.

“Once prioritized, the city’s BPAC will be better-suited to make realistic recommendations for improvements to bicycling and walking within the city,” Kearns said.

The evening will also feature more information about the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, meet and greet with committee members, rules of the road and basic bicycling and walking tips.

The public workshop will be held from 5 PM to 7 PM in the Pinery Room of the Portage Co. Library, 1001 Main Street. A quorum of the city council may be in attendance.

Free food and drinks will be provided. The night’s schedule follows:

5:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Bicycle Show: See a selection of not your run-of-the-mill bicycles including recumbent, cargo, electric assist, and tandem bikes.
On-Site Bicycle Licensing: Bring $6 along with your bicycle serial number and conveniently register your bike on site. Bicycle licenses are non-expiring; they help PD recover your bicycle if stolen, and licenses are mandatory in Stevens Point.
Bicycle/Pedestrian Information Tables: Tour our information tables, talk with community members, and learn about bicycling and walking activities for all ages and abilities, hiking/biking tourism, area clubs, safety, and more.

Presentation: BPAC will give a brief presentation on the Portage County Countywide Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan adopted by Stevens Point last October.
