SPASH’s Koontz twins capture State Titles

Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) juniors Brady and Dylan Koontz each won a State Title at the WIAA Division 1 Individual State Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison Saturday, Feb. 27.

Brady Koontz took home the Division 1 State Title at 106 pounds, as he won 11-4 over sophomore Dominic Dentino of Hartland Arrowhead (31-8) in the finals to finish 43-1 this season and capture the SPASH wrestling team’s first State Title since 1999.

Dylan Koontz followed in the next match with an 8-4 victory over sophomore Aaron Schulist of Mukwonago (38-5) to win the State Title at 113 and cap his season with a 44-0 record.

SPASH senior Fritz Schierl lost 6-3 in the State Championship at 160 to junior Jackson Hemauer of DeForest (48-2) to place second and finish 43-1 on the season, while Almond-Bancroft/Pacelli senior Cole Warzynski, last season’s Division 3 State Champion at 285, lost 8-3 in the Division 2 State Championship to senior Gabe Bautz of Waukesha Catholic Memorial (45-6) to place second at 285 and finish 47-2.

Senior Nate Engle placed fifth at 195 and sophomore Chance Bailey placed sixth at 126 for SPASH, while both Amherst wrestlers at state also reached the awards podium in Division 3, as sophomore Max Villnow finished fifth at 195 and sophomore Bryce Holderman was sixth at 170.
