A stack of reusable bags has been placed in the mayor’s office inside the courthouse — leftovers, according to Mayor Mike Wiza, from a promotion at the Stevens Point Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Wiza said there are about 80 of the reusable shopping bags left, and they’re free for the taking as a part of his administration’s “Boycott the Bag” promotion in March.

The promotion was announced almost simultaneously with a Change.org petition of the same name, which seeks to ban single-use plastic bags entirely within the city limits, though Wiza said he was not familiar with the petition.

“When you go shopping, bring your own or choose paper, but do not choose plastic carryout bags,” Wiza said in an email statement announcing the boycott last month. “I know it will require a little change in our lifestyles, but let’s give it a try.”
