Sheriff announces internet exchange location to safely buy and sell items

Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas has established an internet purchase exchange location at the Portage County Law Enforcement Center, 1500 Strongs Ave., Stevens Point. People who buy, sell and exchange items arranged on the internet, such as from Craig’s List, Facebook buy/sell/trade sites and several popular websites, can now do so in a neutral location under the watchful eye of law enforcement cameras.
“People are often hesitant to meet other people they do not know at their homes to make these types of exchanges,” said Lukas. “Now they can do so, away from their home in a neutral location, all while being recorded by security cameras.”
The exchange location is in front of the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) and Portage County Sherriff’s Department. People are encouraged to look for the green and white sign showing where the best location for the exchange is. This area is under constant video surveillance, as are other parking spots in front of the building.
Any problems with an exchange can be reported to law enforcement by using the intercom inside the front door of the LEC, or in an emergency by calling 9-1-1. Motorists should remain with their vehicle at all times.
