Third-ranked UWSP opens NCAA Tournament at top-ranked Adrian
The third-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
(UWSP) men’s hockey team (21-5-2) will look to secure a spot in the NCAA
Division III Frozen Four when it plays at top-ranked Adrian (Mich.) (24-3-1) in
an NCAA Division III Quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Central Saturday, March 19.
The Pointers received a Pool C (at-large) bid to the NCAA
Division III Tournament after they won 4-3 in the double overtime of UW-River
Falls in the Championship Game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (WIAC) Tournament Saturday, March 5.
UWSP and Adrian played twice during the regular season, as
Adrian scored three goals in the third period to win 3-2 at home Nov. 28, while
the Pointers won 6-4 at home Feb. 5.
The Pointers finished as the National Runner-up in each of
the last two seasons, while Adrian advanced to the Frozen Four last year,
before it lost to eventual National Champion Trinity (Conn.) 5-3.
The winner Saturday will advance to National Semifinals to
take on either seventh-ranked SUNY-Geneseo (19-4-6) or ninth-ranked Williams
(Mass.) (19-5-2) at Herb Brooks Ice Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y. Friday, March
25.
