City Times Staff
One man has been “substantially injured” after an incident in northeast Stevens Point.
Several police units responded to a report of possible gunshots on the 200 block of Minnesota Ave. at 7:48 PM. Police later determined the “incident” actually occurred on the 2700 block of Fifth Ave., which intersects with Minnesota Ave. The area is home to several off-campus student rental complexes.
Police on the scene were observed by witnesses searching the area with flashlights, and at least one officer was seen carrying a brown paper bag from a search area to his squad.
According to a press release from SPPD Chief Marty Skibba, once on the scene at Fifth and Minnesota, police were also called to Berg Gym, 2000 Fourth Ave., where the man had sustained the injuries.
Skibba said UWSP law enforcement was also actively involved in the investigation.
The male was transported by ambulance to Ministry St. Michael’s Hospital, and later transported to a trauma center for additional care.
“At this time we are investigating both incidents and believe both may be related based on evidence at both locations,” the press release read in part. “The Stevens Point Police Department does not believe any other individuals are at risk at this time, based on current information.”
Skibba also said police are seeking any information relating to the incident. If anyone had observed, or heard information, they are asked to contact the Stevens Point Police Dept. as soon as possible at (715) 346-1500.
