PoCo Sheriff’s Office Installs New System For Public to Track Valuables
Report-It helps Portage County citizens store important information in case of loss or theft
For the City Times
The Portage County Sheriff’s Office this week announced a new online system to help residents keep track of personal property.
Report-It is a free, secure online service allowing citizens to record serial numbers and upload images for
phones, electronics, and other valuables. Should those items ever be stolen, the Sheriff’s Office says
having the information will go a long way in accurately and quickly identifying your property.
“It’s critical to be able to identify your property if it’s ever stolen or lost,” said Sheriff Mike Lukas. “This is an easy, secure, and free way to get this done.”
The Report-It service is a part of an online system, known as LeadsOnline, that works with law
enforcement across the country to track and recover stolen property. Lukas’ said his office has used the system for “several years now” and has reported many successes. Recently, the system helped detectives discover a multi-county burglary ring, and recover dozens of stolen articles.
When an item is sold to a pawn or secondhand shop, the product information is entered in the
database and is immediately visible to participating law enforcement across the country.
People can store serial numbers, item descriptions, pictures, and scans of receipts so items may be more easily identified in the event of theft. This record may also come in handy when filing claims with insurance providers in the event of loss. The information is not accessible by law enforcement or anyone else — in case of a theft or loss, the victim simply prints out the information and gives it to the police.
Anyone wanting to participate in Report-It can register for the free service at reportit.leadsonline.com
and begin building their personal property inventory list.
