Local officials will celebrate Mayor and County Day of Recognition
Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza, Portage County Executive Patty Dreier, village of Plover Administrator Dan Mahoney and village of Plover President Tom Davies will all recognize Portage County’s national service members during the fourth annual Mayor and County Day of Recognition for National Service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, at the Central Rivers Farmshed, 1220 Briggs Court, Stevens Point.
The Mayor and County Day of Recognition is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the National League of Cities and Cities of Service and celebrates the more than five million Americans who serve at over 60,000 locations across the country in education, assisting communities as they recover from natural disasters, supporting military families, improving health and building economic opportunity.
More than 80,000 AmeriCorps members mobilize more than four million volunteers annually and Senior Corps programs engage over 360,000 older Americans to meet community needs. CNCS also operates FEMA Corps, AmeriCorps NCCC, School Turnaround AmeriCorps, the Social Innovation Fund and the Volunteer Generation Fund as well as provides training and leadership to nonprofits.
Local officials will be in attendance to hear from AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members positively impacting Portage County, its communities and their host sites.
Portage County National Service members from AmeriCorps and Senior Corps have been invited to this year’s celebration. Members including Senior Corps RSVP and Foster Grandparents from the Portage County Aging and Disability Services Center, AmeriCorps members from Farm to School, United Way of Portage County, Central Rivers Farmshed and the Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association will attend.
AmeriCorps and Senior Corps allow members to serve the communities in which they live, have flexible schedules, help build members’ professional skills, and are always looking for applicants. The Lincoln Center is the host site for many Senior Corps members in Portage County. Senior Corps members are community members over 55 who have a desire to continue using their skills and knowledge to better their communities.
